One of the things a lot of people don't know about what I do is that there is so much time and work put into things that no one ever sees. I was fortunate this summer to audition for four Broadway shows - fortunate, because for most Broadway auditions you need to be requested by the casting director to be seen - and was I called back for two. Made it to the third round of callbacks for one show, so I know I'm getting closer! Each audition requires a lot of preparation; you are sent a packet of lines ("sides") to memorize and songs to learn. If it's a show I haven't seen, we see the show or movie. I need to memorize all the sides (usually at least 6 or 8 pages, sometimes more) and work on them with one of my acting coaches. I learn the songs with my voice coach - usually adding a lesson or two - and practice daily at home. I also brush up on dance with my dance coach. It can easily be 15-20 hours of work for each audition, on top of my usual lessons!
